What is an ABE assessment?

ABE assessments differ from program assessments. Our ABE assessments can be seen as assessments for success. They are designed to assess your skills and help you succeed. They do not affect your ability to enter our ABE programs and begin taking courses. If required, when completed, your assessment will help you succeed by ensuring that you are placed in the course that is right for you. If you have any questions, contact our ABE Student Success Advisor, or our Aboriginal Student Transition Advisor. If you’re ready to book you assessment, call 250-740-6425.

How can I prepare for the ABE placement test?

There are a number of ways to prepare for your ABE placement test:

Why can’t I just write the GED (General Education Diploma) and LPI (Language Proficiency Index) exams instead of taking a course?

The GED credential is no longer available in BC, it was discontinued by the Ministry of Education in 2014. Successfully completing the LPI allows you to enter a university of trades program, but it cannot be used towards your adult education diploma.

What if I need extra help with my ABE courses?

Talk to your instructor and/or the ABE Student Success Advisor, or our Aboriginal Student Transition Advisor.

I need to upgrade my math and English, but I don’t live in Nanaimo. Can I take these courses online?
